Index checker
Published · By IndexChex
In brief
An index checker is a tool that reports whether specific URLs are present in a search engine's index, usually by querying live search results for each address. Bulk index checkers process thousands of URLs at once and are used to verify backlink indexing, audit sites, and decide which pages to resubmit.
Definition
An index checker answers a narrow question: is this URL in the index right now? It does not measure rankings or traffic. For one page on a site you own, Google's URL Inspection tool gives an authoritative answer. For pages on other people's sites, or for thousands of URLs, an index checker queries Google's public results and infers the status.
How checks work
Most checkers build search queries around the target URL. Common forms include:
- a site: query on the exact URL, which Google says "may help you understand whether a specific URL is indexed and served";
- an inurl: query;
- the URL itself, bare or in quotes.
If any query returns the URL, it is marked indexed. Using several forms reduces false negatives, because a single query can miss a page that is indexed.
In practice
Index checkers are used to:
- confirm whether newly built backlinks are on indexed pages;
- audit a client site where Search Console access is not available;
- find pages that dropped out of the index after a migration or update;
- create a resubmission list for a backlink indexer.
Results are normally exported as a CSV with one row per URL.
Limits and accuracy
Search results are not a perfect mirror of the index. Google's own documentation says a site: query "doesn't necessarily return all the URLs that are indexed" under a prefix, and Search Console Help notes that results are customized by location and other variables. A page can also be indexed under a different canonical URL, in which case the submitted address may not show up even though its content is indexed. Every checker therefore has some error rate, and a single "not indexed" result is a prompt to recheck, not a verdict.
Status in a checker also differs from Search Console's view. Search Console reports reasons such as Crawled - currently not indexed only to verified owners; a public checker sees only whether the page appears.
Relation to backlink indexing
Verification is the half of backlink indexing that keeps vendors honest. Without it, users depend on a provider's own report of success. IndexChex bundles an index checker with its submission service; it tests each URL with the four query forms above, and its weekly measurement on recurring URL sets (as of October 2026) puts the checker at about 96% accurate on average.
