Crawled - currently not indexed
Published · By IndexChex
In brief
Crawled - currently not indexed is a reason shown in Google Search Console's Page indexing report meaning Google fetched the page but did not add it to the index. Google says the page may or may not be indexed in the future and that there is no need to resubmit the URL for crawling.
Definition
In the Search Console Page indexing report, every known URL is either Indexed or Not indexed, and not indexed URLs carry a reason. Crawled - currently not indexed is one of those reasons. Google's description is short: "The page was crawled by Google but not indexed. It may or may not be indexed in the future; no need to resubmit this URL for crawling."
The label tells you the problem is not access. Googlebot reached the page and downloaded it. The page stopped at the indexing stage.
Why it happens
Google does not give a per-URL explanation for this reason. Its general documentation says indexing is not guaranteed and lists common causes of non-indexing, including low-quality content and site designs that make indexing difficult. In practice, pages in this bucket tend to be:
- thin pages with little unique text, such as tag archives or empty profiles;
- near-duplicates of other pages (if Google identifies a clear duplicate, it usually reports a separate duplicate or canonical reason instead);
- recently published pages still being evaluated;
- pages on sites with weak overall signals.
Search Console Help also reminds owners that not every URL should be indexed, so some entries here are harmless.
What to do
- Inspect the URL with URL Inspection to confirm the crawl date and the canonical Google chose.
- Decide whether the page matters. If it does not, leave it or consolidate it.
- If it matters, improve it: add unique content, strengthen internal links, and remove near-duplicates.
- Request indexing or use Validate fix in the report only after changing the page.
Simply resubmitting an unchanged page addresses a stage the page has already passed.
Contrast with the discovered state
| Reason | Crawled? | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| Discovered - currently not indexed | No | Crawl postponed |
| Crawled - currently not indexed | Yes | Indexing decision |
Relation to backlink indexing
Owners of third-party pages see this status in their own Search Console; link builders do not. They see the symptom instead: an index checker reports the source page as not indexed even though a backlink indexer confirmed the crawl. This is the gap between crawling and indexing that services such as IndexChex point to when they say no tool can guarantee indexing. A page that stays out after a crawl usually needs a better link source, not more submissions.
