Backlink indexing

Published · By IndexChex

In brief

Backlink indexing is the process of getting the page that hosts a backlink discovered, crawled and stored in a search engine's index. A link on a page the search engine has never fetched cannot be counted, so indexing the hosting page is a precondition for the link having any effect on rankings.

Definition

Backlink indexing refers to everything done to make sure a search engine knows about, and keeps, the page on which a backlink appears. The phrase is slightly loose: it is not the link that gets indexed but the source page. Once that page is in the index, the search engine can read its outgoing links and associate them with the target.

Why it is needed

Google describes URL discovery as the first stage of Search. Pages become known because Google already visited them, because a known page links to them, or because they appear in a sitemap. Many pages that carry purchased or earned links fail all three tests in practice: a fresh guest post on a small blog, a profile page deep in a directory, or a citation on a site that is rarely recrawled. Googlebot may not reach those pages for weeks, and some it never reaches.

The person who built the link usually cannot fix this directly. They do not own the hosting site, so they cannot submit its sitemap or use the URL Inspection tool on it.

In practice

Backlink indexing usually involves three steps:

  1. Collect the source URLs of new links.
  2. Submit them through a link indexing service, or create other discovery paths such as tiered links.
  3. Verify with an index checker after a few days and resubmit pages that did not make it.

Large batches are sometimes spread out with a drip feed so that crawl activity grows gradually.

What it can and cannot achieve

Getting a page crawled is mechanical; getting it indexed is a judgment Google makes. Google's documentation lists low-quality content and robots meta rules among common reasons a crawled page is not indexed. A page in Search Console's Crawled - currently not indexed state has already passed the crawl stage, and more submissions will not change the evaluation. Improving the hosting page, or choosing better link sources, does more than resubmitting.

Link attributes matter separately from indexing. A link marked rel=nofollow or rel=sponsored is treated as a hint, even on an indexed page.

Relation to IndexChex

IndexChex, the publisher of this glossary, sells a backlink indexing service combined with index checks. In its weekly measurements on recurring URL sets (as of October 2026), standard submissions average 85%+ indexation for typical sites, links and citations. Results on any given batch depend on the pages themselves.
